If you are new to blogging or have been blogging for a few years, you would have probably heard of blogging networks. They are blogging communities that allow you to put a link to your blog, discuss your blog and even pay to advertise your blog......all to other bloggers. That is the problem, you are singing to the choir. Most avid blog readers are not bloggers themselves.
One well known blogging network that is now gone was EntreCard. I was a member for several years until Google started to down grade websites and blogs for high bounce rates. EntreCard was well known for encouraging high bounce rates among their users. In order to curb high bounce rates on my blogs I removed all the EntreCard code.
So what do you do to encourage new visitors or engage your readers? Simple, use social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook or Google+. Google the search engine really loves social networks and if it finds links to your blog on them it will boost your blog pages in searches. To Google the more people talking on social networks about your blog means your blog has value.
So forget the blogging gimmicks and engage your readers naturally and socially.

How to get more visitors sent to your blog from Google
There is no secret that Google likes good blogs with unique content, so why is yours being overlooked? It is often what Google finds and dislikes on your blog that will determine if you get more visitors or not. Google is about links and bounces not so much about what is actually written as long as it is different from another page.
Before I begin, let me say that the tips I have will only work on blogs that you host on your own domain with wordpress.org software. If you have that then let's begin.
All of the methods I will mention I have used and gotten great success from them.

- Check those broken links and repair or remove them. Google does not like broken links. You can install a plugin to check broken links and they do work. When I installed one on my wordpress blogs I got over 115 broken links on one blog alone. Once I removed or fixed them, my visitor rate from Google search went up by 25% a day.
- Find and fix your 404 errors. Yep those pesky "file not found" errors. If you removed a post or renamed a page then you are going to get those 404 errors. A visitor ends up on one of those generic 404 pages and quickly surfs away from your blog. Install a 404 redirect plugin. The good plugins for that will show you the pages that are resulting in 404 errors and you can redirect them to other pages in your blog. Instead of your visitor getting a 404 page they will be greeted with a page that they can do a search on or find the information they were looking for. I started doing that last month on 2 of my blogs and both of them have now doubled the amount of daily visitors. One went from 50 a day to 260, mostly from Google search.
- Install Google analytics. Yep, let Google know your visitor and bounce rate. When Google sees the bounce rate going down, they will send more visitors to your blog. Works for me every time.
My Google ads are paying higher per click
The last week or so, the clicks on the Google ads on this blog have increased only slightly but the pay out per click has increased by at least 300%. Just today I got one click that paid me $2.65 which is 3 times the normal rate per click that I get on this blog. Too bad that I will never find out what ad that was clicked on so I could cater to those keywords to trigger more higher paying Google ads.
Since I write blog posts on a wide variety of subjects, almost all of them pertaining to money or careers, it would be helpful to me to know what ads are being clicked on. For example are the ads about coupons and saving money or are they about investing in your future with education? I know that the higher paying ads are directed to medical, lawyers and insurance but job hunting and higher education is also gaining a tighter market for ads. If the ad was for education, was it for a medical career or a computer career like mba management? I would like to know that.
Do you know if there is a way I could find out what ads were clicked on? If you do just leave a comment. I am sure that others would be interested in finding out that as well.

Writing more articles for Associated Content
I am so thrilled to becoming a popular writer on Associated Content. I am now a featured contributor for 3, yes 3 sections. AC kept sending me emails asking that I join the sections (pets, technology and finance) that I finally gave in and joined.
I have been a member on there since 2006 but did not start writing for them until 2007. The advantages of becoming a featured contributor is that you write 3 articles about your chosen subject each month for $10 each. That means I will earn $90 minimum for maybe 4 hours work each month. Of course that does not include the other articles I write which I can get paid a minimum of $6 each and most of them are in the $10 to $15 range. I can easily earn $200 a week if I wrote 3 articles a day.
I have noticed that many new writers on there do not have a clue how to be successful on the site. They write articles that the subject matter can be found else where. For example, articles about "how to get rid of acne fast" will not get many views if that subject matter is covered in-depth at the Mayo Clinic website. The same for almost any subject. Your article has to not only be unique but on a subject, but also not covered in-depth all over the internet.
Another thing that the new article writers are doing is writing their articles in the style of a blog post. AC is stepping in and removing those articles - thankfully. "Open letters" and "updates on what they have been doing" to their "fans" is not what Associated Content needs or wants on their website.

Google puts a stop to link selling once and for all
Well it looks like Google has finally had enough of people selling links and will stop it. Google dropped the biggest hint of all, by not updating the PageRank in the toolbar since April. They have also sent hints out via their own employees in their help sections. You should read this one about the PageRank update. It was posted just a few days ago.
I would not be surprised to see all the toolbar rankings go to "0" or gray out. Google removed the toolbar from its webmaster toolbox last year.
So here is my suggestion for those companies that want inbound links to your own websites - find well respected blogs and websites that have the same subject matter as your company and contact them to place real advertisements on those sites. Don't use advertising companies as they have those weird forwarding links like doubleclick, linksygny or clickad and they don't have a direct link to your site. You are going to have to contact blogs and websites the old fashion way, individually.

Google to drop the use of PageRank
What would you do if Google's PageRank disappeared from the Google toolbar? If you have a website or practice some sort of basic SEO, you would probably panic. A Google employee hinted at just that in October 2009. Since then Google has only updated PageRank twice on the toolbar, the last time in April 2010. It would not surprise me in the least that Google might remove the page rank part of the algorithm to their search engine.
Now I have some thoughts on PR:
Around April-May, Google released Caffeine into the world wide web. At the same time Matt Cutts made a few videos that stated that Google will be actively searching the web for unique content. So now you have the real clue as to what is going on with Google, they don't want linking as much as content, unique content at that. So bye-bye paid linking, bye-bye link farms, and good riddance to websites that are nothing more than a few paragraphs set up for Adsense only. Who knows what might be next, maybe real quality websites!!!
Now I have some thoughts on PR:

- How many blog owners that currently make money selling links would have to find real jobs or learn real online marketing?
- What method would webmasters use to show others that their website is worth advertising on? Would it be pure traffic, Alexa rating or something else?

A list of low paying adsense ads to remove from your website
I bet you have tried your hand at earning money with Google Adsense and have made only pennies so far.Your websites and blogs are getting lots of traffic and even lots of clicks but each of those clicks are only .01 or even less. You are thinking about flushing the whole idea down the toilet....but wait, before you think about toilets, flushing and giving up on the idea of Adsense on your website or blog have you thought about removing those low paying clicks?
I bet you didn't know that you could filter out all those .01 cent ads from being shown on your sites, did you? You can. All you have to do is add the URL's of the low paying ads to your Competitive Ad Filter in your Adsense account.

The list is only a general one and is by no means all conclusive. By adding those URL's above to your filter you should see most of your clicks go up in price. It takes a minimum of 4 hours for the filter to kick in once you have added the URL's so don't expect immediate results.
Experimenting with Adsense
I have never made that much money with Google Adsense so I thought I might start up 2 new blogs that were just geared to generate income only using Google Adsense. I found some great information online on how to do it. Most of the SEO I already knew but it is finding the right high paying keywords that I could wrap an entire blog around that stumped me. For example I love crafts and animals but none of the words I looked up in my own Adsense account showed that they were worth more than a dollar. As you know, the cost of an keyword has very little to do with what a publisher gets so I was aiming at words or phrases that would cost at least $5 or more. Next I tried the shopping angle and put in everything from video games and iphones to LED TV's - nothing over $1.40 Next I tried womens items and checked cosmetics to ecco shoes and still nothing. I did find out that expensive services are high priced keywords. Medical procedures, legal services, loans and even insurance were all in the high priced keyword area. So that gave me a brilliant idea. I would start up a blog devoted to one medical problem and another one devoted to expensive travel and see how each one would do.
The one beautiful thing I know about blogging for Adsense is that you don't have to have a lot of traffic for it, just the right words in your articles to show up in Google searches. I currently have one blog that gets a few cents a day with Adsense and get maybe 20 visits a day so it doesn't take many visitors to generate Adsense clicks. The ads are not large either, they are just a small list at the bottom of the blog post - not plastered all over the place. What makes the difference in the content, it is unique and Google loves unique content.
Another thing for those grammar hounds out there, guess what, lousy grammar makes no difference to Google at all. A blog with misspellings, wrong words or looks like it was written by a 6 year old will often show up high in searches along with the "perfect" blogs because of their unique content. I should know because several years ago my young daughter had a blog on Wordpress.com and she would get 150 to 300 visitors a day! Dumb me, thought I could monetize that blog so I moved it to blogger and added ads and started to write blog posts. My style of writing and proper grammar killed it.
Back to my experiment, I did find out from the "gurus" that for a good Adsense generating blog you only need 12 - 20 in depth articles on your subject that are 500-1000 words long. I figured if I write one article each week then in about 3 months I should start to see some extra income coming in from those 2 blogs just from Adsense. I am aiming for at least $20 a day income from those 2 blogs in a few weeks. It should be easy to get just $10 a day from each of them. Let's see if this works out.

Just a few ideas on how to make more money with your blogs
I was over on You Tube a few days ago and watched almost 50 short videos on internet marketing. Most were by people that didn't have a clue to what they were doing and they just re-hashed the old visit other blogs and make comments and of course have a Twitter account and a Facebook page (remember when it was a MySpace page?). Then I stumbled upon a great guy that was actually the head of a big company and he was teaching SEO tactics to affiliates. Although he was showing how to market a product, some of the same concepts could be applied to marketing a blog.
He was saying not to bother as much with the making comments on other blogs or even using Facebook, he was saying that you should let Google do the work for you. The number one thing he was emphasizing was to write unique and well written content. Do not duplicate any content since Google will notice it and put your little article in never-never land. If you start to write unique in-depth articles of more than 1000 words then Google will start to take notice of them and put you up higher in the search engines. But your content MUST stay in line with the rest of your blog subject matter in order for this to work. Say for example you have a blog about skin care. An in-depth article about adult acne causes would fit right in, but one about muscle cars would not and Google would penalize your blog for doing that, because it does not contain relevant content. Don't forget that in your in-depth articles you can place your affiliate links and suggestions for where to purchase items that you have mentioned.
So I tried that method on one of my blogs. First I Googled the title of my blog post to see how many other results I would be up against. There were only 3 pages and most of them were not really relevant. So I wrote my article and it took several hours to put it together and another 2 hours to get my affiliate links placed just right. After the post went live, I pinged it with ping-o-matic and then Tweeted it. About an hour later I typed in the same search terms I used before and there was my article on Google search, 3rd from the top!!! It had been indexed already. Now I just have to sit back and let that article make money for me.
Now if I do, say 2 in-depth articles a week for each of my 5 active blogs then it should take only a month till I start seeing a dramatic increase in traffic to my blogs and I have let Google bring that traffic to me.

Affiliate marketing has always intrigued me. Years ago I thought you just put a bunch of affiliate banners on a website and that was it to affiliate marketing, but I was wrong, so wrong. That was the part that intrigued me. The successful ones were not the scam artists but just damn good writers. So I have decided to try my hand at it.
I will write about what I am passionate about and leave the diet supplements and cell phone article writing off of my list. I also spent most of yesterday watching several CEO's of SEO companies give seminars on YouTube about affiliate advertising and my eyes were opened way up. They gave some very insightful guidance on how to go about affiliate advertising without being a jerk or scammer and become known as an expert in your field. That was exactly what I had been looking for.

How to deal will blog comment spam
I recently made this blog a "do follow" for the URL on the blog comments. It opened up a flood of really weird comments on posts that were over a year old. I have had to go through each one and filter out where the URL were pointing to. I don't mind the occasional short comment like "great post" or even "you don't know what you are talking about" comment but when those short ones have URLs pointing to some Viagra site or link farm then I just delete them.
That is what is known as comment spam. Someone just leaving a comment so they can have a link to their link farm or affiliate page. Most of the big name professional bloggers have had to deal with comment spam at one time or another. I personally moderate the comments but the bigger professional bloggers have so many comments that they have an automated approval system. They often require a person to become a member of their community before they can leave a comment. That way they are not giving out backlinks to commentators which means that spammers usually don't join their community.
If you have a blog, you must decide how you are going to deal with comments. Comments are often vital for a blog, depending on the subject matter. You can turn your comments off or on or, just run your blog like a regular website. The choice is yours and yours alone.

When will website owners ever learn?
Proper SEO (search engine optimization) techniques are not known by website owners and they should be. As you know I have a blog known as The Playful Pup and it is all about dogs. I get this comment the other day on it about "we have linked to your site and require a reciprocal link back" type of comment. So I checked out the website and found out it was a page of a real estate website in New England. They had lots of Google ads on it and other dog sites listed as well as some sites for exercise and diet pills. It looked like a link farm to me. So thankfully they left an email and I emailed them back and here is my email:

The main reason you will not find your link on my site is that I don't link to LINK FARMS which is what your site page appears to be. I only link to other dog related websites and blogs, yours is niether. I will not be linking to your site.

I was just a tad ticked off since Google would not appreciate seeing a dog website on a Real Estate site because it does not appear to be a "natural" link. My blog would be down graded because of it. I wanted that website to take it (the link to my blog) down - FAST and the only way to do that mention the words LINK FARM. Here is the email I got back from them:
Our site is not by any stretch a link farm, as we have only 10 links per page, and the site has many hundreds of pages of content related to our business, which includes selling farms in RI, PA, MA, and NY.
Never the less, as your attitude indicates you have no need for links to valuable sites, which would help your site, we will delete the link... no problem.

Age is a benefit for websites and blogs
The older your blog or website is the better the chances for it to be found by search engines. If you have some sort of analytics on your blog or website you can see where your visitors came from. You will notice that your older entries on your blog or your older pages on your website will get more traffic than your newer ones. The reason for this is the fact that those older pages have been indexed by the search engines.
Have you ever done a search for something on the internet and you seem to always come up with results that are over 6 months old? What you are experiencing is the same thing that your own visitors are experiencing.
There is a way to use that fact to get more traffic to your websites and blogs. Using your stats find out which are your most popular entries that are found by the search engines. In those entries make some of the words into hyper links to your newer entries. You are now cross promoting your own blog or website using the search engine. It will force the search engine into indexing your newer blog or website entries and will increase your chances of being found during searches.

Paid blogging companies are approached by companies that have something to sell or need links into their websites. Those blogging brokers like Pay Per Post, Blog to Profit, Smorty and others then turn around and offer bloggers $5-15 to write a blog post with a link to the customers website. What the blogging brokers don't tell the bloggers is that the big companies are paying them $50 or more per blog post.
What the usual result is a poorly written product or website review or even a blog post that just mentions a word with a link to the customers website. Sure the company get some link juice from a blog with Page Rank but what happens to that Page Rank in 3-6 months when the blog looses their own Page Rank?

Link mania, or how to improve your Page Rank
I know how hard it is to just get a foot hold on the internet. I learned how to blog on one of those community blogs. It was fun for awhile until I wanted to venture out on my own. I found wordpress.com and started up a fun, not for profit blog there. I had fun with it and started up a few more on wordpress over the course of the next year. Some I continued with but most of them I shut down. I still have 2 very popular ones there. Each one has a Page Rank of 5 and 6 each. I get about 250-600 visitors a day on one of them, the other one only 100. Both of them popular but alas wordpress says I can't advertise on them or they will delete them.
So here is what I do, I write short blog posts on them directing them to one of my other blogs that I can make money on. That not only increases my Technorati rating with a backlink but will increase my Page Rank in the long run. The key is to link to blogs that have higher Page Rank than my blog has.
What if you don't have another high ranking blog? Simple find a blog that you enjoy reading and make a comment in their comments section. First check if the comment will allow a link back to your blog - some don't. Most of them link to your name or email and not your blog.

The Google bot
The Google bot has just visited this blog so I expect the blog to have a page rank in the next few weeks. One blog I started on the 5th of October 2007 already has a page rank of 1 but I don't have more than 10 posts on it. It is more of a fun thing that I did for Halloween.
